Welcome back, everyone! We hope you had a lovely Easter break and that you are ready for all of our super-learning in the summer term – we can’t believe how quickly it has arrived!
Max tames the wild things and crowns himself as their king, and then the wild rumpus begins! But when Max has sent the monsters to bed, and everything is quiet, he starts to feel lonely and realises it is time to sail home to the place where someone loves him best of all.
Our class book this half-term is ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. It tells the story of a boy who creates a new world in which he is King of the Wild Things, and celebrates with a ‘wild rumpus’. There are lots of amazing writing opportunities, and we will be writing a character description, a letter and a diary entry. We will revisit the basic EGPS features we have looked at over the course of this year, as well as introducing the prefix ‘-un’.
In maths, we will be getting stuck into multiplication and division, where we will be introduced to using arrays, sharing into groups and will consolidate our learning on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will also be looking at fractions where we will be focusing on finding halves and quarters of shapes and quantities.
We will be digging deep underground as we start our new history topic – Mining Marvels. This will be a study of our local history, as we look at how coal mines were used, why people used them, what it was like to work in a coal mine and why children were sent to work in them. We will use all of our new knowledge to understand why coal mining was significant in Doncaster.
There is only one place we want to be in the lovely summer weather – the beach! Our geography topic will see us exploring different coastal towns from all over the world.
We will be completing our phonics screening check in the summer term. All of our children have been practising their reading and identifying those pesky alien words, and we are so proud of the progress we have seen in each and every one of them. Please continue to read regularly with your child to support them with this and feel free to contact me if you would like any additional help with this.
Our P.E. day will continue to be on a Monday, and we hope to complete this outside in the sunshine where possible, so please make sure your child is wearing the appropriate kit and that they always bring their water bottle. *Remember to remove earrings*
How can I help my child at home?
Make sure you read with your child at least 5 times per week.
Help your child to complete their weekly spelling and handwriting homework to develop key skills
Ensure your child completes their Times Table Rock Stars for 20 minutes per week
Please make sure you complete your homework weekly, five reads every week, arrive in the correct PE kit and have an attendance of 96% or above to be ‘In It To Win It’!
We are looking forward to another fantastic term in 1P, and we hope to continue to:
'Be the Best we can Be'.
